Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Gilman Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be a United States citizen.
  2. Should be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited higher education institution in the United States, including both 2-year and 4-year institutions.
  3. Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant either at the time of application or provide documented proof of Pell Grant eligibility during the intended study abroad program or internship.
  4. Must be applying for, or accepted into, a study abroad or internship program that awards academic credit. For a prize to be paid out, acceptance into the program must be verified.
  5. Applicants must select programs in countries or areas with a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2. Specific high-risk locations with Travel Advisory Levels 3 or 4 are not eligible.

Application Deadlines

Opportunities are available for study or work abroad in the spring, summer, fall, winter, or the entire school year.

For the October 2023 Deadline, applications are open from mid-August 2023 for programs or jobs abroad starting between December 1, 2023, and October 31, 2024. The application deadline is October 5, 2023, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.

For the March 2024 Deadline, applications are accepted from mid-January 2024 for programs or jobs abroad starting between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025. The application deadline is March 7, 2024, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.
