Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Gilman Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Should be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited higher education institution in the United States, including both 2-year and 4-year institutions.
- Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant either at the time of application or provide documented proof of Pell Grant eligibility during the intended study abroad program or internship.
- Must be applying for, or accepted into, a study abroad or internship program that awards academic credit. For a prize to be paid out, acceptance into the program must be verified.
- Applicants must select programs in countries or areas with a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2. Specific high-risk locations with Travel Advisory Levels 3 or 4 are not eligible.

For the October 2023 Deadline, applications are open from mid-August 2023 for programs or jobs abroad starting between December 1, 2023, and October 31, 2024. The application deadline is October 5, 2023, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.
For the March 2024 Deadline, applications are accepted from mid-January 2024 for programs or jobs abroad starting between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025. The application deadline is March 7, 2024, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.
